Time-release system fights bacteria in infected gum pockets

Gum disease treatment is one of the most important, yet least understood aspects of Dr. Dennis Lucas’s dental practice in Naples, Florida. Most of our patients see value in common treatments such as dental cleanings, filling cavities, and restorative dental techniques, but gum disease treatment exists on a little different level because it may not directly involve your teeth.

However, gum disease treatment serves an important role because your gums protect your teeth and the structures that hold them in place. When appropriate, we use a direct antibiotic application called ARESTIN® as a supplement to traditional gum disease treatment procedures. This combination typically results in a reduction in the amount of bacteria that live in the deep periodontal pockets between your gums and lower tooth structures.

ARESTIN is a prescription medication that we apply directly to the infected pockets in your gums rather than swallowed in pill form. This way the microspheres that contain the antibiotics go exactly where they’re needed.

How ARESTIN works with other gum disease treatments

We use ARESTIN in collaboration with deep-cleaning procedures known as scaling and root planing to treat periodontal pockets. The scaling process removes plaque and tartar that exists below the gum line, while root planing smooths the root of the tooth and helps the gums reattach to the tooth.

If you an appropriate candidate, we then apply ARESTIN directly to any infected periodontal gum pockets. This attacks harmful bacteria deeper beneath your gum line and for a longer period than scaling and root planing alone. This time-release version of gum disease treatment prevents bacteria from returning as quickly as with traditional procedures alone, helping your body disrupt the progression of periodontitis.

We recommend ARESTIN as part of your overall oral health program, along with good brushing and flossing, and scaling and root planing as appropriate. ARESTIN is not medically appropriate for everyone. We will conduct a thorough health history interview to determine whether this antibiotic gum disease treatment is right for you.
